OUR ENVIRONMENT

Central Otago is a fragile tapestry of wild schist hills, tussock grasslands, and clear rivers. The dry climate and dramatic landscapes host unique alpine plants like mountain daisies.  Native species, including the endangered grand and Otago skinks, thrive here alongside iconic native birds like the kārearea (New Zealand falcon).

But this beautiful region faces real challenges. Wilding pines and invasive weeds such as broom and lupins threaten native habitats and displace fragile riverbank ecosystems.. Wild cats prey on native lizards and birds and can spread disease.

And of course there are the rabbits!

Local residents and visitors can play a vital role by controlling invasive pests, supporting habitat restoration, and staying on marked tracks to help protect these special places. Desexing cats and keeping them indoors at night, also reduces predation pressure on native wildlife.
