VINEYARDS

Central Otago is New Zealand's southernmost wine region, and for such a young region, local wines already have a significant international reputation.

The first vineyards were established around Tarras in 2000, planted mostly with cool climate Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes, and with some Pinot Gris. The industry continues to grow, with the majority of new plantings centred on Bendigo.

The climate can be challenging for growers, and protecting the new shoots from spring frosts requires constant vigilance. However, hot, dry summer days help ripen the grapes and the long daylight hours help to prolong the growing season. Slower ripening preserves the acidity inside the grapes whilst the sugars and flavours develop.

Alongside the wine industry, in 2024, Scapegrace opened the largest distillery in New Zealand just above Lake Dunstan, at Bendigo Downs. This four-stage project, including site tours and a restaurant, is scheduled to be to be completed in 2027.
